Merge real and virtual serial ports

Olga Weis

Working with serial port equipment you may face the situation where you need to establish a simultaneous communication between multiple COM-based devices and programs at a time. If you are a ham radio amateur, for example, you might be rather familiar with this challenge. It doesn’t seem an easy matter to share the same serial port between several transceivers, logging software, radio control and SWR display apps, etc. But there’s a solution and it’s simpler than you can imagine.

All you need is a dedicated app called Virtual Serial Port Driver PRO. This utility has a powerful feature allowing users to combine multiple physical and virtual serial interfaces within one port bundle.

Here’s how it works:

  1. After you installed VSPD PRO on your PC, you go to the 'Merge' tab.
  2. There you select all ports you’d like to join, specify their type (real/virtual) and add them to your bundle by clicking the "Add port" button. fuse serial ports
  3. Click “Add merge” and the port bundle will be successfully created in the Bundle tree. Add merge and combine COM ports

The advantage of this type of connection is that all of the added ports share the data they receive with all the other ports of the bundle. In practice if you connect your ham radio transceiver to one of the joined ports, the device will be able to send data to all of the applications and devices connected to the other ports simultaneously.
